影片改编于真实日本士兵遗留日记。二十世纪三十年代初，日本画家石桥贤太郎（中泉英雄 饰）新婚不久被迫应征参加对中国的侵略战争。在一次战役中遭遇中国军队顽强抵抗几乎全军覆没。一心想活下来的石桥从死人堆里爬了出来，为了求生穿上中国士兵的衣服，被村里刚被日本人杀死丈夫的寡妇凤莲（漆子美 饰）所救。来到村子后村民误把他当成了抗日英雄，对他悉心照料，百般敬佩，石桥只好装作哑巴在村子中生存，日子一天天过去，石桥对善良的村民们产生了感情，对战争更加感到厌恶。而此时日本军队为了抓慰安妇也来到了村子，石桥该何去何从。
